What makes The Remy apartments ideally located—being steps from the New Carrollton Amtrak and Metro transportation hub—is also what makes it an oasis in an area void of shopping, restaurants or a sense of community.
With that in mind, we envisioned a welcoming mountain resort, with all the amenities of a city neighborhood beautifully brought under one roof. Using a vocabulary of warm woods, earth-toned fabrics and leathers, and rustic décor, we sought to create a social experience throughout its expansive lobby, where one space flows seamlessly into another. A stroll through these open areas brings opportunities for small or large gatherings, multiple spots to telework, and a comfy area to curl up by the fireplace—just as one would find at a resort.
The design team created a gaming area and clubroom—enclosed with glass walls that allow light to stream from the building’s private courtyard through the rest of the lobby. Residents can host functions in these separate but transparent spaces, hang out by the fire, or shoot a game of pool. They can also see regular movie screenings in the well-appointed theater, or escape to smaller nooks where they can bring gaming consoles to play with a couple of friends on a screen that’s bigger than their own TV.
Besides its many venues for working individually or with others, the building is ideal for commuters with jobs on the train lines from DC to Baltimore. Muffins and coffee are served each morning by the concierge desk, making it convenient for residents to grab something as they dash out the door. Transit screens show arrival and departure schedules for train and bus lines, and comfortable seating by the front windows makes it easy to wait for rides.
A gym and yoga studio overlooking the lobby, finally, allows the residents to de-stress at the end of a hectic day.
